Between April and October, navigation conditions are perfect in Split; with hot, dry summers and mild winds (10-20 knots) across the Adriatic. Combined with warm waters and blue skies, the climate could not be more ideal for a yacht charter. You should be mindful of the Bora (dry, cold, north-easterly), Jugo (humid, southerly) and Maestral (landward blowing) winds, which shouldn’t be an issue during your navigation, but it’s important to be aware.
Maybe you love relaxing on your yacht, but also love being active and exploring… Split is the place for you! You can enjoy the perfect tranquility of your sail, and then head on land and explore Marjan National Park by bike or on foot, or head further afield and go on a day trip to Plitvice National Park and wander through the emerald canopies and across tiny footbridges to reach the enchanting turquoise waterfalls. A yacht charter in Split won’t just be discovering the Adriatic onboard your boat, you can rent sea kayaks or bring on board your diving or snorkeling gear and explore the world beneath the waves. If you’re an adrenaline-seeker, head to Brač island, where you can also windsurf and mountain climb.
One of the best things about sailing in Split is it gives you access to some of Croatia’s most beautiful beaches. Take Brač island for example, if you rent a boat from here, you will be a stone’s throw away from Croatia’s most famous, most photographed beach, Zlatni Rat. This unique strip of sand stretches out into the turquoise ocean, giving you breathtaking panoramic views. On mainland Split, Bačvice beach is popular with families with its central location and shallow waters, but if you head 4km west of the main city, you will come across the more secluded Kašjuni beach, with translucent emerald waters, views of towering cliff-faces, and a tree-lined shingle beach. Though the area has few facilities, it’s part of what makes it feel so idyllic, so be sure to check it out during your yacht charter!
Split is Croatia’s second largest city, and is a stylish, vibrant hub of culture on the Dalmatian coastline. Its diversity and beauty attracts sailors and tourists from all over the world, so whether you visit before, during or after your yacht charter, make sure you dedicate at least a day to discover the hidden gems of this inspiring city.
Wake up early and grab a coffee from a cafe in Diocletian’s Palace. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the palace covers over 38,000 sq meters, and is the living heart of the city. Home to restaurants, galleries, bars, shops, residents, the monument is one of the world’s most impressive Roman remains which is still inhabited and used on a day-to-day basis. Spend the morning getting lost in the arches and alleys of the palace, and grab some lunch from one of the many restaurants serving up exquisite Croatian dishes, before hopping on Bus 12 from the Riva out to Marjan National Park for a breath of fresh air in what’s known as the ‘lungs’ of the city of Split. Wander through pine forests and discover medieval chapels, hike or cycle up to lookout points for stunning ocean and city views, and then head down to the secluded Kašjuni beach. This green oasis is the perfect breathing space away from the city bustle, and can be accessed by boat, so if you don’t get a chance to visit when in the city, you can always navigate here during your yacht charter!
When you start to get tired, take the bus back to the city and take a break in a charming café in the old town, and get a refreshing gelato. Then go for a stroll along the waterfront Riva, and find a spot to sit and eat dinner and drink wine in front of the glorious colours of a Split sunset, until night descends and there’s more than enough choice of bustling bars to enjoy a Croatian cocktail.
Split is the perfect place for seafood! A yacht charter from here will expose you to some of the freshest fish in Croatia, find it at Konoba Matejuška, a cosy, rustic tavern located on a charming side street by the waterfront. Or head to Konoba Marjan, which sells regional specialities such as cuttlefish ‘brujet’ (fish stew), and a variety of locally produced wines. If you want to try other Croatian delicacies, head to Zinfandel restaurant and try ‘Pašticada’, which comprises of veal or beef stewed in prunes and red wine, a dish typical of Dalmatian cuisine.
Split Airport is the second busiest airport in Croatia, located 24km from the city, in the town of Kaštela. If you wish, transfers from the airport to your yacht charter base can be organized (at an extra cost).
