More accessible and less windy than the Cyclades, the Saronic Gulf, is an ideal sailing destination for families who want to depart from Athens. Thanks to this itinerary, you will discover beautiful islands, amazing natural reserves, and the rich culture of Greece.
One week cruise itinerary in the Saronic Gulf
Day 1 - Athens
Embark from the Marina Alimos base in Athens. Take time with the base manager to take inventory and familiarise yourself with the boat. You can easily buy supplies in the supermarkets behind the marina. Before setting sail, try to take a day out of your holiday to visit Athens, the capital and largest city in Greece. Between ancient sites and modernity, you will discover the charm and dynamism of a city with a varied and abundant heritage.
Day 2 - Athens to Aegina (18 miles)
On your first day of the cruise, head for Aegina, an island in the heart of the Saronic Gulf, famous for its archaeological sites, including the Temple of Zeus and the Monastery of Agios Nektarios. In small typical taverns, don't miss the opportunity to taste the culinary specialities of the town of the same name, especially its pistachios and fresh fish. In the evening, moor at the port of Agia Marina, famous for its beaches and nightlife.
Day 3 - Aegina to Methana (10 miles)
Continue your journey to Methana in the southwest, a peninsula of volcanic origin. Here you can climb the volcano and visit the ancient fortifications. The peninsula is also full of hot springs which are said to have healing properties. Finally, brave the coastal paths and enjoy the views of the Saronic Gulf, for an escapade between sea and mountain.
Day 4 - Methana to Poros (6 miles)
On this fourth day of sailing, hoist the sails and head for Poros, a group of two islands separated by a small channel. Just a short distance from the Peloponnese and the town of Galatas, Poros is famous for its charming little streets and hills of white houses with colourful shutters. Finally, don't miss the cove of Vaghiona, famous for its clear waters. For the night, anchor at Sphaeria.
Day 5 - Poros to Hydra (18 miles)
From the port of Poros, head for the mythical island of Hydra, one of the most authentic in the Gulf; no cars are allowed. Everything is done by a donkey! Hydra is also known as the most romantic place in Greece. Discover the architecture of the city, stroll along with the seafront, scuba dive or climb up to the caves to admire the viewpoints overlooking the cliffs. Finally, discover the beach of Bisti, the most beautiful on the island!
Day 6 - Hydra to Spetses and Epidaurus (65 miles)
Let the waves carry you to Spetses, an island with a rich history as the home of Albanian Christians escaping Turkish persecution. To find out more, visit the Museum of Bouboulina, a figure of Greek patriotism during the War of Independence. In the late afternoon, it's time to start your return. Enjoy a final stop in Epidaurus, a picturesque town famous for the remains of its nearly 15,000-seat amphitheatre.
Day 7 - Epidaurus to Athens (35 miles)
Your Saronic Gulf itinerary comes to an end and it is time to return to the base in Athens. Take to the sea for a while and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Gulf one last time. Don't forget to tidy up and clean the boat to facilitate your check-out with the base manager. Also, remember to refill the water and fuel tanks.
